Ortlieb Ultimate 6 Classic Medium Handlebar Bag Info

Ortlieb Ultimate 6 CLASSIC Medium Handlebar Bag

  • See  Optional Handlebar Bag Accessories including . . . Extra-large Fold-out Waterproof Map Case, GPS Case, Light and Accessory Adapter, Padded Camera Insert, Extra Mounting BracketInternal Divider, and a Mounting Bracket Extender to hold the bag even farther from the handlebars for unusual shaped handlebars, or to accommodate wide-reaching brake levers.
  • YES!  The Ultimate 6 Handlebar Bags come with a mounting bracket.  An extra handlebar bag mounting bracket may be purchased separately (see “Optional Handlebar Bag Accessories” above).  Many of our customers have both touring and commuting bikes, and they like to swap their handlebar bags back and forth from one bike to another without having to remove and reinstall their mounting brackets.
  • Mounting Bracket Extender . . . If you are wondering if your bars have enough room for a handlebar bag, the Ultimate Mounting Bracket places the back of the handlebar bag 2 inches in front of the handlebars.  The optional Mounting Bracket Extender adds an additional 1-3/4 inches between the handlebar and bag, so with the optional Extender, the bag sits 3 3/4 inches in front of the handlebar.  The medium and large handlebar bags are about 9 3/4 inches wide at the bracket level.  Measure 2 inches in front of your handlebar, and check to see if a bag that is 9 3/4 inches wide will fit between handlebars that curve forward.
  • Ultimate 6 Classic Handlebar Bags match the Ortlieb CLASSIC series panniers.
  • The Ultimate 6 Classic is made from waterproof and very durable coated polyester fabric with plastic stiffeners inside to help it hold its shape.  All exterior seams are high frequency welded, providing excellent waterproofing along with narrow manufacturing tolerances.  You will be impressed by the high quality workmanship!
  • The Ultimate Mounting Brackets are incredibly rigid and strong.  They WILL NOT slip.  If you cannot tighten your Ultimate bracket and find that it slips or sags or the bag drops down, give Wayne a call, and he can explain the steps where you misinterpreted the mounting instructions and tightened the mounting bolts out of order.  Follow the instructions exactly in order, do not get ahead of the instructions, and you will find that the bracket is very simple to mount, easy to tighten, and incredibly secure — to quote a customer — “rock solid.”
  • The Ortlieb Ultimate 6 Handlebar Bag has magnetic lid closures with adjustable closing force, a cord/loop fastening system for Map and GPS cases, and a locking lid.
  • The cord/loop method of securing map and GPS case keeps them snug to the lid when riding, so they don’t flap in the wind.  Map and GPS Cases do not “stack.”  You will use one or the other.
  • INCLUDED FEATURES:  a locking mounting bracket, a key holder hook, an integrated inner pocket with for organizing your small items, a super reflective 3M Scotchlite reflector patch on the front of the bag, and an integrated shoulder strap.
  • The center loop at the back of the bag allows you to open the bag with one hand, important if you want to quickly grab a snack while riding.

  • Caution!  Ortlieb Ultimate Handlebar Brackets are not for carbon fiber handlebars!  The clamping forces may damage the carbon fibers, resulting in handlebar failure!
  • Wayne says:  “I will never go on a long distance tour without my handlebar bag!”  It is where I keep items I like to access quickly and easily without having to get off of my bike ‒ items such as my camera, energy snacks, tissues, keys, wallet, money, ID, passport, a map in the top window, etc. . . and I also use it for a waste basket.  When I ride up a mountain pass, I often find myself so focused on the ride that I don’t want to stop for photos.  With a camera living in my handlebar bag it is easier to pull off the road for a quick photo opportunity without having to dismount the bike.  I can put one foot down, take a quick photo and be back in the saddle in seconds without losing the rhythm of the climb.  And later, I don’t regret missing the photo.  If I need to take a restaurant or restroom break, the handlebar bag comes off of the quick-release bracket and becomes a shoulder bag, so I don’t risk having my critically important items stolen.  If you have not toured with a handlebar bag, you don’t know what you have been missing!
  • EVERYONE ASKS . . . “What’s the difference between the Ultimate 6 Plus and Ultimate 6 Classic handlebar bags.”  The Ultimate 6 PLUS has two small mesh pockets on the lower sides of the bag (visible in the photos above).  The outer mesh pockets are not on the Classic version.  The Ultimate 6 PLUS has an INCLUDED Internal Divider.  The Internal Divider is optional on the Classic version.  The PLUS handlebar bags are made with the Plus material that matches Plus series panniers in both fabric texture and colors.  The Classic handlebar bags are made from the Classic material – a match with Classic panniers in fabric texture and colors.

  • If you have never used a handlebar bag, you may worry that you will not like the way your bike handles.  The first time you ride with a handlebar bag, you will definitely know it is there, and it may be a little disconcerting.  But soon you will quit feeling the differences you noticed on the first ride, and riding with a handlebar bag will become your new normal.  Before long you will feel like something is missing if you go for a ride without it!  If you are worried that you won’t see the road in front of you, don’t worry.  It won’t be long before you will realize that you don’t watch the road passing under your front wheel anyway.  You’ll know the front wheel is always centered on your handlebar bag.  If you do watch the road go under your wheel when you ride, you will eventually become well acquainted with a parked car!
Packing and Dimensions
  • The Ultimate 6 Handlebar Bag lid is rounded high to allow water to run off.  If I stuff my handlebar bag well into the lid space, it becomes difficult to remove one item from the bag while I am riding without causing other items to fall out.  When I don’t pack all the way into the lid, it is much easier to access contents while riding.
  • Customers often ask “how much bigger is the size Large than the Medium?  Most tourists find that the size Medium is plenty large if they are not carrying an SLR camera, and size Medium is by far the biggest seller.  Both sizes are about the same height, and the same width between the handlebars.  The Size LARGE Ultimate 6 Handlebar Bags are larger than the size Medium bags by about 1.2 inches in the forward dimension – the direction you ride your bicycle.  I recommend getting Size Large if you plan to carry a large digital SLR camera in the optional padded camera insert.  Size Large will give you a little more room in the front of the bag for carrying extra items, such as wallet, keys, ID, sunglasses, etc.  The padded camera insert will fit in the size medium as well, and will allow you access to the pocket at the inside front of the bag, but you will have less room for extra’s.
  • Comments on dimensions:  This bag has rounded corners.  It is not a perfect rectangle.  If you measure the bag yourself, don’t expect Height x Length x Width to equal the stated volume.  I think Ortlieb’s stated dimensions are numbers that form a rectangle that equals the volume they have physically measured.  I point this out because I have had customers call me to say they thought they had received the wrong size bags, because their own measurements didn’t match the stated specifications.  When I use a tape measure to calculate the volume, I get a much larger volume if I simply take the greatest height x length x width and don’t allow for the rounded surfaces that reduce the volume of a perfect rectangle.  Hopefully this makes sense!
